An acronym for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of CHemicals, REACH refers to an EU chemical regulation that took effect on 1 June, 2007. EU regulations such as REACH are in force immediately and in equal measure in all EU member states when they come into effect. REACH achieves a fundamental harmonisation and simplification of previous legal provisions concerning chemicals.

The REACH system is based on the principle of direct responsibility of industrial players. Following the concept "no data, no market," only chemical substances that have been registered beforehand can be made available in the area where the regulation applies. Any manufacturer or importer seeking to make substances available in the area where the REACH regulation applies must possess an individual registration number for those substances!
